Nuclear Renaissance: Oklo, BWXT, and the Micro-Reactor Race

Oklo's Aurora reactor uses a fast-spectrum design with metallic fuel, targeting both terrestrial microgrids and eventually off-world applications. BWX Technologies is further along with NASA contracts for nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), which could cut Mars transit times in half. Nano Nuclear Energy is the earliest stage, developing ultra-portable reactor designs.
The investment thesis is straightforward: whoever solves compact nuclear power solves the energy bottleneck for permanent off-world habitation. Solar alone cannot sustain a lunar base through the 14-day lunar night.
The regulatory environment has shifted dramatically in favor of these companies. The NRC is streamlining approval processes for advanced reactors, and NASA's recent $300M contract with BWXT validates the technology pathway.
